Holocaust Memorial Day: January 27, 2008

'This tablet is erected by the Sons of Brichtan synagogue, Bromhead Street, E1, to the eternal memory of the 6,000,000 Jews who died under the Nazi tyranny 1939-1945'On Holocaust Memorial Day, 27 January 2008, The Jewish East End Celebration Society, supported by the Borough of Tower Hamlets, organised a very special commemoration in the East London Central Synagogue in Nelson Street, London E1.  Representatives from all faiths spoke movingly on the significance the day had for their communities.  Guest speakers included Kinderstransport refugee Henry Glanz, and East End actor Barry Davis.  Two fine Klezmer musicians played appropriate music, including 'Das Partizanen-Lid'  The song of the Partisans - written in the Vilna Ghetto in 1943.  An English translation of the original Yiddish is below.

The plaque on the left is in the East London Central Synagogue.  It belonged originally to the Sons of Brichtan Synagogue in Bromhead Street and is a memorial to the 6,000,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis.  Double click to enlarge

Das Partizanen-Lid - The Song of the Partisans

You must not say that you now walk the final way

Because the darkened heavens hide the blue of day.

The time that we've longed for will at last draw near,
And our steps, as drums, will sound that we are here.
From land all green with palms to lands all white with snow
We now arrive with all our pain and woe.
Where our blood sprayed out

and came to touch the land, there our courage and our

manhood rise and stand.
