2008 

August10:

Walk -Jewish Musicians of the East  End. Led by Clive Bettington. 10.30 am from Liverpool Street (next to Kindertransport  monument and McDonald’s ). £8 (JEECS members £6). This walk is dedicated to the memory of Solomon, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, whose birthday was on August 9. No need to book.

September 1: 

Walk -Jewish Musicians of the East End. Details as above.

September 3:

Walk -The history of Jewish Boxing in the East End. Led by Clive Bettington. 10.30 am from Aldgate Tube. £8 (JEECS members £6).  No need to book.

Unveiling of plaque to Daniel Mendoza at the Novo Sephardic Cemetery in Mile End Road. 2.30 pm. Further details on JEECS website and in JEECS News Update in this issue.

September 7:

Walk -Jewish Musicians of the East End. See details for August 10.

Walk –Brick Lane, Mecca of the East. Led by Ed Glinert. 10.30am from Aldgate East Tube (Commercial Street exit).  £8 (JEECS members £6). This walk looks at the Jewish influence in the area.  The characters discussed include Lew Grade, Bud Flanagan, Barney Barnato etc.  No need to book.

JEECS agm. 2.30pm, Nelson Street synagogue, Nelson Street, London E1 2DE.  The afternoon will include musical entertainment; details will be on the website.

September 13 and 14: 

Walks and other events organised to celebrate the entire heritage of the East End back to the Romans and covering more than just the built heritage.  JEECS has arranged for both the Velho and Novo Sephardic cemeteries to be opened on both days. There will also be a small exhibition at Queen Mary’s College on both cemeteries and on the history of the Peoples Palace. See website for details and JEECS News Update in this issue.

September 21:

Walk -Rudolf Rocker and the Radical History of the Jewish East End. 10.30 am from Aldgate Tube. £8 (JEECS members £6).   No need to book.

Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of the anarchist Rudolf Rocker and the 100th anniversary of his son Fermin Rocker, the artist. 2.30pm. Toynbee Hall.  Speakers include Dr Ben Gidley, Prof Bill Fishman, Prof Seidle, and Julia Weiner.  Tickets £10 for members of JEECS to include light refreshments

September 28:

Walk –Old Jewry:  the First Jewish Ghetto.  Led by Ed Glinert. 11.00am from St Paul’s Tube (Cathedral exit). This walk will look at the Biblical patterns followed in key London landmarks, the medieval Jews in the City and the Resettlement of the Jews under Oliver Cromwell. Tickets £8 (JEECS members £6)

Walk –Jewish Bloomsbury.  Led by Clive Bettington.  2.30pm from Russell Square tube.  Clive discusses the famous Jews associated with this fascinating area of London including the Woolfs, Amy Levy, Melanie Klein, Sir Percival David, Benjamin Disraeli, Abby Warburg and many other intriguing people. Tickets £8 (JEECS members £6)

October 5:

Walk –The dark side of the Stepney Ghetto.  Led by Ed Glinert. 2pm from Tower Hill Tube. In this walk Ed looks at the more sinister aspects of life in the East End – the poverty. Jack the Ripper, the Battle of Cable Street etc. Tickets £8 (JEECS members £6).  No need to book.

October 12: 

Walk –The Jewish Emigrés of Hampstead.  Led by Clive Bettington. 11am from the ticket hall of Swiss Cottage Tube. Clive discusses the Jewish émigrés who gravitated to this most intellectual of suburbs over the years, and particularly the German and Austrian Jews who fled Nazi Europe. They include Sigmund Freud, Elias Canetti, Erno Goldfinger, and many other distinguished writers, musicians and painters. Tickets £8 (JEECS members £6)

October 19: 

Walk – The Jewish East End and the Rise of Zionism. Led by Clive Bettington.  10.30am from Bevis Marks synagogue.  This walk looks at the famous Zionists who had links with the East End including Herzl, Moses Gaister, Zangwill, Rabbi Kook, Naftali Imber, Ben Gurion etc. The anti-Zionists including Claude Montefiore, Sir Samuel Montagu and Dr.Herman Adler will also be discussed.  Tickets £8 (JEECS members £6). No need to book

October 26:

Seminar – The Jewish East End and the Rise of Zionism. 10.30am. Toynbee Hall. This all-day seminar will feature talks on the East End and Zionism in the period 1890-1948. Among the speakers will be Dr Colin Shindler, Prof. Michael Berkowitz and Dr.Brian Klug. The full programme will be on the website shortly. Year dedicated to discussing the radical political history of the Jewish End – anarchists, socialists, Communists etc. The year marks the 100th anniversary of the Siege of Sidney Street and the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street.
